Security at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak was significantly ramped up on Thursday, December 19, following a shocking incident where a sports utility vehicle (SUV) was allegedly used in an attempt to run over students on the campus. The event, which occurred on December 16, sparked widespread outrage after a video went viral on social media platforms on December 17.
Police Action and Heightened Security Measures
The Rohtak police have taken swift action in response to the alarming event. An FIR, numbered 216/2025, has been registered at the PGIMS police station in Rohtak. The case has been filed under several sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically 109(1), 126, 190, 191(2), and 351(3).
Law enforcement officials have detained two youths believed to be involved in the incident and have successfully recovered the SUV used in the alleged attack. Rohtak Superintendent of Police Surender Singh assured that the police are taking "firm and strict action" regarding the matter.
Visibly increased security measures were implemented across the university on Thursday. Police commandos armed with modern weapons were deployed alongside the university's own security personnel at all main entry points. Entry to the campus was restricted to those with verified student identity cards, and every vehicle entering was subjected to thorough checking.
Roots in an Earlier Dispute and Past Case
Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed that the current episode is linked to a dispute over vehicle parking that erupted on the MDU campus earlier on December 16. The official complaint was filed by Vicky, a Ph.D. scholar at MDU.
During their inquiry, the police also noted a disturbing pattern. The complainant, Vicky, had been a victim of a separate life-threatening attack in 2024. A case regarding that earlier incident was already registered at the same PGIMS police station. Authorities confirmed that all accused in the 2024 case have been arrested, and the matter is currently pending before the court.
Political Fallout and Ongoing Investigation
The viral video of the SUV incident did not just alarm the public; it also triggered sharp questions from opposition leaders. They have criticized the state government's handling of security on university campuses, turning the event into a political issue concerning student safety.
As the police continue their investigation, the focus remains on ensuring such brazen acts of violence are not repeated. The combination of heightened security, legal action under the new BNS, and the link to a previous case highlights the seriousness with which authorities are treating this threat to student welfare at Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
