In a significant development for higher education in Bihar, the Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) senate has approved a deficit budget of Rs 1,349 crore for the financial year 2026-27. The decision was taken during a meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary.

Budgetary Projections and Financial Overview

The budget, presented by the university’s financial advisor Indra Kumar, outlines projected expenditures of Rs 1,529.73 crore against an estimated income of Rs 181.29 crore. This substantial deficit highlights the university's ambitious plans for expansion and development in the coming years.

VC Highlights Progress Under National Education Policy 2020

In his presidential address, VC Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary emphasized that LNMU is actively fulfilling the objectives behind its establishment, with all academic activities being conducted in strict accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He reported significant infrastructure milestones, including:

  • Completion of a new women’s hostel
  • Construction of a social science block
  • Ongoing strengthening and upgrading of laboratories for practical subjects

Digital Initiatives and Research Enhancements

The vice-chancellor detailed several digital initiatives that are transforming the educational landscape at LNMU:

  1. E-learning lab in the university library benefiting students
  2. Research through platforms like Shodh Ganga, Shodh Shuddhi, and Shodh Chakra under INFLIBNET
  3. Implementation of the e-Granthalaya system for library management

These initiatives received formal approval during the senate's previous meeting, demonstrating the university's commitment to technological advancement in education.

Academic Achievements and Specialized Facilities

VC Chaudhary expressed pride in the university's research accomplishments, noting that two researchers—Abhishek Adarsh and Suravi Kumari—received the prestigious Young Geographers Award from Central University of South Bihar. Additionally, Sonu Kumar was honored by Patna University for his work utilizing the remote sensing laboratory.

The geography department has further enhanced its capabilities with the establishment of a dedicated audio-video lab, providing students with cutting-edge resources for multimedia learning and research.

Pioneering Digital Education Platforms

LNMU has distinguished itself as the only university to have fully adopted the provisions of SWAYAM-MOOCs, an open platform offering free online courses by the Union Ministry of Education. This initiative allows students to access massive open online courses alongside traditional classroom teaching, significantly expanding their learning opportunities.

Administrative Modernization Through SAMARTH Portal

Following directives from the governor’s secretariat, LNMU is implementing the SAMARTH portal for official work across colleges and university offices. The comprehensive scheme includes 44 modules, with several already in operation:

  • Leave module implemented at university level since January 1
  • Payroll management and pension modules scheduled for imminent implementation
  • Plans to extend these modules to affiliated colleges in the near future

This administrative digitalization represents a major step toward streamlined operations and enhanced efficiency throughout the university system.
