Indore: DAVV IET Ragging Complaint, Juniors Forced to Smoke

Indore Engineering College Faces Fresh Ragging Allegations: Inquiry Launched

A new ragging complaint at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya's (DAVV) Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Indore has prompted a formal investigation, following reports from first-year BTech students residing in the hostel. The juniors alleged persistent harassment by second-year students, raising serious concerns about campus discipline and student safety.

Disturbing Allegations of Coercion and Threats

The complainants detailed several troubling incidents, including being forced to smoke cigarettes under duress. They reported threats of being declared "batch out" if they refused to comply with the seniors' demands. Students marked as batch out are systematically excluded from academic and cultural activities, and often face public humiliation within the hostel environment.

Further allegations described a culture of subservience, with juniors being made to speak with their heads lowered and hands folded in front of seniors. The complaint also highlighted the involvement of a few first-year students who allegedly pressured their classmates to participate in or tolerate the ragging activities.

Investigation Underway with Evidence Collection

During separate interactions conducted by the institute authorities, seven to eight first-year students confirmed the occurrence of ragging incidents. Names of several senior students have emerged during the preliminary inquiry. Institute sources indicated that strict disciplinary measures are being considered, which could include rustication for one year for some accused students, while others might receive transfer certificates.

IET director Dr Pratosh Bansal confirmed that the investigation is actively progressing. "Students are being interrogated as part of our thorough inquiry. We have obtained some audio clips that serve as evidence in this case. Our team is also reviewing CCTV footage and conducting detailed questioning of students involved," he stated.

Scheduled Anti-Ragging Committee Meeting

Dr Bansal further revealed that an anti-ragging committee meeting has been scheduled for January 29 to determine the appropriate course of action. "The committee will review all evidence and testimonies before deciding on the disciplinary measures to be implemented. We are committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for all students," he emphasized.

Pattern of Recent Campus Incidents

This latest complaint adds to a concerning series of incidents at the campus:

  • On August 25, five students were suspended following an assault on a junior student
  • On September 30, a separate issue escalated to a formal police complaint
  • On October 1, four junior students allegedly broke a hostel window and fled the premises, while 16 CCTV cameras were damaged in related incidents

Administration's Response and Future Measures

With repeated cases emerging, the administration has indicated plans for stricter monitoring protocols and firm action against those found guilty of misconduct. The institute appears determined to address the systemic issues contributing to these incidents and reinforce a culture of respect and safety on campus.

The situation at DAVV IET highlights ongoing challenges in combating ragging in educational institutions, particularly in engineering colleges where hostel environments can sometimes foster such problematic behaviors. The outcome of the January 29 committee meeting will be closely watched by students, parents, and educational authorities alike.
