Jaishankar Launches IIT-Madras Global, Aims to Create World's First Multinational University
IIT-Madras Global launched to become multinational university

In a landmark move for Indian higher education, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar officially launched the IITM Global Research Foundation on Thursday. This ambitious international initiative by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is designed to transform the premier institute into what it envisions as the world's first multinational university.

A Four-Pillar Vision for Global Expansion

Detailing the strategic blueprint, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti explained that the IITM Global initiative will function through four core pillars. The first is facilitating technology transfer to international markets. The second involves fostering joint international research projects with global partners. The third pillar focuses on creating overseas business opportunities for startups emerging from IIT Madras. The final pillar is aimed at attracting foreign investment directly into the institute's thriving innovation ecosystem.

To operationalize this vision, IIT Madras has already inked multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with partners across the globe. These include three agreements in the United States, one in the United Kingdom, three in Germany, three in Dubai, three in the Asia-Pacific region, and six under the 'India-for-Global' initiative. These collaborations will concentrate on joint research, industry partnerships, startup support, and international talent exchange.

Initial Footprint and Festival Fortnight Inauguration

The initial phase of IITM Global's physical expansion will see centres established in the United States, Dubai, Malaysia, and Germany, with concrete plans for further geographical growth. Designed as a plug-and-play platform, IITM Global aims to seamlessly connect the institute's researchers, startups, and industry partners with international markets, capital, and research opportunities.

Alongside the global launch, Dr. Jaishankar inaugurated the 'IITM Festival Fortnight'. This two-week event includes the institute's popular Open House, which grants the public access to IIT Madras's advanced labs and innovation centres. The Fortnight also encompasses the annual technical festival Shaastra (January 2–6, 2026) and the cultural festival Saarang (January 8–12, 2026).

Diplomacy and Leveraging Domestic Strengths

During an interaction, Minister Jaishankar addressed India's global engagement, emphasizing that clear and honest communication is key to ensuring the country's intentions are not misread internationally. He stated that India's civilisational confidence and democratic foundations continue to shape its global partnerships.

Addressing the gathering, which included Director Prof. Kamakoti, Dean (Global Engagement) Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, IITM Global CEO Madhav Narayan, and other stakeholders, Jaishankar elaborated on India's foreign policy approach. He said it focuses on leveraging domestic strengths through international engagement. He invoked the principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family), explaining that India does not view the world as a hostile space. The challenge, he noted, is to achieve maximum global impact with limited resources, a problem Indian diplomacy strives to solve by utilizing the nation's competitiveness and institutional strengths.

This strategic launch positions IIT Madras at the forefront of a new model for Indian academia, aiming to project its educational and technological prowess onto the global stage while attracting worldwide talent and investment back to its Chennai campus.
