IIT Kharagpur to Roll Out AI-Driven Surveillance System for Enhanced Student Safety
In a significant move aimed at bolstering campus security, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is preparing to introduce a sophisticated automated notification system at its main entrance. This high-level surveillance mechanism, leveraging advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, is designed to meticulously track the movements of students entering and exiting the campus premises. The primary objective is to ensure the safety and well-being of the student community, particularly during late-night hours.
How the Automated System Will Function
The newly developed system will operate by triggering instant SMS or email alerts to parents or guardians whenever a student crosses the campus boundary. This notification protocol will be especially active during what the institute defines as odd hours—specifically between 10 PM and 6 AM. The implementation follows a recommendation from a fact-finding committee established after a tragic incident involving a PhD scholar. The student had left the campus in the evening and was later involved in a fatal accident, with the institute having no prior knowledge of his whereabouts.
An official from IIT Kharag highlighted the necessity of such a system, stating, "Often, students provide incorrect contact details for their parents, which complicates emergency communication. When incidents occur off-campus, the institute is held accountable. Therefore, this automated tracking is essential to keep parents informed and enhance overall safety measures."
Student Concerns and Institutional Response
Despite the safety intentions, the proposed system has ignited a wave of concern among students regarding privacy and personal autonomy. The Technology Students' Gymkhana promptly convened an emergency Senate meeting to address these issues. A feedback form was circulated among the student body to gather opinions on how to balance safety with individual freedoms.
A student representative shared, "We expressed our apprehensions to the administration during the meeting and received assurances that the system will not be activated until all student feedback is thoroughly reviewed and considered." This dialogue underscores the institute's commitment to incorporating student perspectives before finalizing the rollout.
Administration's Stance on Safety and Responsibility
Director Suman Chakraborty elaborated on the rationale behind the initiative, emphasizing parental anxiety and the challenges of monitoring off-campus activities. "Parents are naturally worried when their children are far from home. Since we cannot control the sale of harmful substances outside campus, we need this system to track movements, especially at night. It is unreasonable to expect responsibility without authority. Students who find it problematic to inform parents about late exits are welcome to stay off-campus if their intentions are genuine," he stated.
Currently, students must present their institute ID cards and log details in a register when leaving the campus. For exits between 10 PM and 6 AM, additional notifications via email to the warden, faculty adviser, and security control are mandatory. The new AI-powered system aims to streamline and automate these processes, reducing manual errors and ensuring real-time updates.
