New Delhi: In a significant expansion of higher education opportunities, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has announced the availability of over 40,000 seats across 230 undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes for the 2026–27 academic year. The online registration process is scheduled to commence on February 2, marking the beginning of the admission cycle for one of Delhi's premier state universities.
Comprehensive Admission Brochure Released
The university officially released its detailed admission brochure on Wednesday, which meticulously outlines seat intake capacities, newly introduced academic programmes, and revised admission pathways. The brochure was launched by Education Minister Ashish Sood, underscoring the government's commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and accessibility.
Seat Distribution and Reservation Policy
Of the total 40,000+ seats, a substantial 37,419 are allocated for undergraduate programmes, while 5,316 seats are designated for postgraduate courses, and 22 seats are reserved for PhD aspirants. In alignment with the university's mandate to serve local students, 85% of these seats are exclusively reserved for candidates from Delhi, ensuring that residents have priority access to these educational opportunities.
Introduction of New Academic Programmes
GGSIPU has introduced 24 innovative courses to its academic portfolio, significantly diversifying the educational offerings available to students. Among the notable additions is a three-year LLB programme, catering to the growing demand for legal education. The university has also granted affiliation to nine additional government and private institutions, further expanding its academic network and capacity.
Admission Pathways and Examination Structure
For the upcoming academic cycle, admissions will be conducted through a combination of national-level entrance examinations and the university's own Common Entrance Test (CET). The national exams include the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
University officials anticipate that between 1.5 lakh and 2 lakh applicants will participate in the CET, which is scheduled to take place between April and May. This robust examination framework is designed to streamline the admission process and ensure a fair and transparent selection mechanism.
Addressing Vacant Seats Through Strategic Initiatives
A key policy shift for the 2026–27 academic year involves the utilization of CUET scores to fill vacant BTech seats, moving away from the previous reliance solely on JEE. This strategic adjustment aims to mitigate the issue of repeated vacancies observed in previous years. Additionally, the university is implementing several other initiatives to optimize seat occupancy, including allowing lateral entry in programmes with vacant seats and introducing an AI-based admission chatbot to assist applicants.
Expansion of Academic and Professional Programmes
The new academic offerings encompass a wide range of disciplines, reflecting the university's commitment to interdisciplinary education and industry relevance. The introduced programmes include:

Enhancing Teacher-Training and Health Sciences
Teacher-training capacity is set to expand significantly through the introduction of BA-BEd (Special and Inclusive Education) degrees. These programmes offer specialisations in critical areas such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, hearing and visual impairment, learning disability, and multiple disabilities, addressing the growing need for specialized educators.
In the health sciences domain, the university is proposing MD courses in palliative medicine, radiation oncology, and respiratory medicine. Additionally, programmes in rehabilitation psychology, speech and language pathology, and applied epidemiology are under consideration, pending statutory approvals. These initiatives are expected to bolster the healthcare education landscape in the region.
International Admissions and Institutional Affiliations
For international applicants, admissions will continue through supernumerary seats, maintaining the university's global outreach. GGSIPU currently hosts students from 32 countries, with significant representation from Africa and SAARC nations. Many of these international students benefit from scholarships provided by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), facilitating cross-cultural academic exchanges.
The university has also cleared affiliation for nine new institutions, including four government hospitals—Swami Dayanand Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, and Guru Nanak Eye Centre. These affiliations, along with partnerships with private nursing, management, and healthcare colleges, are anticipated to substantially increase seat availability in MD, MS, nursing, and allied health courses.
Dual-Degree and Student-Exchange Framework
Further enriching the academic experience, GGSIPU is expanding its dual-degree and student-exchange frameworks. These initiatives are designed to provide students with broader learning opportunities, exposure to diverse educational environments, and enhanced career prospects through collaborative programmes.
