Indian LSE Graduate Launches Thomas Tours to Empower Jobseekers in London
In a heartening response to the challenging employment landscape in the United Kingdom, a young Indian student has pioneered a social enterprise aimed at uplifting fellow graduates. Jame Thomas Mathew, hailing from Mallapally in Thiruvalla, Kerala, recently completed his Master's in macro-economics from the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE). At just 23 years old, he has founded Thomas Tours, a unique tour guide service designed to provide fair pay and dignity to graduates struggling in London's competitive job market.
Addressing Graduate Struggles with Innovative Solutions
Jame's initiative comes at a critical time when many international graduates, including those on the UK's Graduate Route visa, face significant hurdles in securing formal employment. He observed firsthand the demoralizing effects of the job slump, with peers often resorting to exploitative part-time roles in retail, characterized by zero-hour contracts that offer little stability or time for career advancement. "I've seen financial constraints force some of my friends to leave the city, while others worked in exploitative part-time jobs, often without so much as a smile in return," Jame recalls, highlighting the urgent need for alternatives.
Thomas Tours is named after his grandfather and leverages Jame's own experiences as a cash-strapped student in London. By tapping into his budget-savvy mindset and intimate knowledge of the city's shortcuts—gained through cycling and walking—he curates customized itineraries that allow visitors to explore London like a local. "Our unique selling point is that we provide authentic customized day tours, taking visitors around like a local using the Tube and famous red buses, while making the most of London's walking-friendly landscape," he explains.
Empowering Graduates with Fair Wages and Flexibility
The core mission of Thomas Tours is to offer graduates a pathway to the London Living Wage, currently set at 14.80 pounds per hour, with the potential for additional tips based on performance. This model provides much-needed financial stability while allowing flexibility for job applications and interviews. "The idea is very simple: graduates need to have flexibility so they can do their formal job applications while earning enough to sustain themselves in the city," Jame states. Guides can work part-time, dedicating days to tours and others to career pursuits, thus combating the loneliness and rejection often faced by young jobseekers.
Since its launch in late January, Thomas Tours has quickly gained traction, securing bookings for June and offering a range of itineraries under themes such as:
- Icons of London: Covering major landmarks like Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.
- Museums and Shopping Streets: Providing immersive cultural and retail experiences.
- Sports and Theatre: Showcasing London's vibrant entertainment scene.
The service operates on a personalized model, beginning with a free online chat to understand travelers' needs, followed by a bespoke itinerary that considers health and access requirements. Payment is only collected at the meeting point, with guides offering money-saving tips to enhance the experience.
A Holistic Approach to Graduate Well-being
Beyond financial support, Thomas Tours incorporates a mental health component, aiming to counteract the isolation and stress associated with job hunting. Jame, who has guided family members from India, including elderly relatives, emphasizes the importance of thoughtful, hassle-free tours. "Every corner of London is steeped in so much history. This graduate-led initiative will guide everyone through famous landmarks, tastiest local eateries that most tourists walk right past, and all at affordable prices," he adds.
Looking ahead, Jame is confident that the tailor-made nature of Thomas Tours will not only benefit graduates but also engage a diverse range of travelers, potentially opening doors to future employment opportunities. "Thomas Tours is a small effort to offer dignity and financial support to graduates like myself. Every penny goes directly to the graduate, who offers a personalized, thoughtful tour, while the client can feel satisfied that they are helping a graduate earn a fair wage in a city they have come to love," he reflects.
This innovative venture stands as a beacon of hope in London's tough economic climate, demonstrating how social entrepreneurship can transform challenges into opportunities for empowerment and community support.
