Trichy Power Cuts Disrupt Students' Exam Prep Amid Voltage Fluctuations
With public examinations currently underway, frequent voltage fluctuations and unscheduled power cuts in various parts of Trichy have severely disrupted students' preparation efforts, sparking sharp reactions from frustrated residents. The timing of these electrical issues has proven particularly problematic, coinciding with crucial study periods for students facing imminent exams.
Residents Report Extended Outages During Critical Study Hours
In Mannarpuram, TVS Tollgate and surrounding areas, residents reported significant voltage fluctuations on Sunday night beginning around 9:30 PM and continuing until approximately 11:00 PM. These fluctuations were followed by complete power outages lasting anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes. With Class 10 examinations scheduled for Monday, students who typically prepare late into the night found their study sessions abruptly interrupted.
"Voltage fluctuations have become a daily occurrence, but on Sunday we experienced a particularly long 40-minute outage," explained V Jai, a concerned resident of Mannarpuram. "My son, who had an important exam the next day, could not study properly during the outage and had to continue working until 1:30 AM after power was finally restored. Should he not be able to approach his exam feeling fresh and prepared? Our complaints to authorities often go unanswered."
Tangedco Attributes Outage to Technical Issue
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) sources have attributed the specific Sunday night outage to a jumper cut at the Mannarpuram substation. While periodic shutdowns are typically scheduled in advance for maintenance purposes, officials noted that such works are usually avoided during public examination periods to minimize disruption to students.
Residents have observed that voltage fluctuations have become increasingly frequent throughout this month, particularly during peak evening hours between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM. This pattern coincides with rising temperatures and corresponding increases in power demand across the region.
Power Demand Surges as Infrastructure Upgrades Continue
According to Tangedco data, electricity demand in the area has surged significantly, reaching approximately 550 megawatts compared to just 430 megawatts at the beginning of the month. This substantial increase has placed additional strain on the existing electrical infrastructure.
A senior Tangedco official provided context regarding ongoing infrastructure improvements: "We have identified 215 transformers requiring upgrades last year, and so far 183 of these have been successfully installed to better handle the increased electrical load. Our teams are working diligently to address all complaints as quickly as possible, with support available around the clock to resolve issues at the earliest opportunity."
The combination of examination pressure and unreliable power supply has created a challenging environment for Trichy students and their families, highlighting the need for more stable electrical infrastructure during critical academic periods.
