Second Tamil Nadu Teacher Faces Disciplinary Action Over Political Event Dance Video
In a recurring controversy in Tamil Nadu, a special school teacher for disabled students from Pudukkottai district is facing disciplinary action after a video of him dancing at an AIADMK political event went viral on social media. This incident follows a similar case in Thanjavur district just weeks earlier, highlighting ongoing tensions between government employees and political participation.
Viral Video Prompts Immediate Official Response
Sources confirmed that Rajesh Kannan (52), a teacher at a special school in Viralimalai, Pudukkottai, was seen dancing enthusiastically at an AIADMK event in the Viralimalai constituency. The constituency is being contested by three-time MLA and former minister C Vijayabaskar in the upcoming elections. The video, which surfaced on Thursday, quickly gained traction online, prompting education authorities to take swift action.
A senior district education officer stated, "A notice has been issued seeking explanation from the teacher who is on temporary posting. We have also raised it with state authorities for necessary action." In the widely circulated footage, Kannan can be clearly identified wearing an AIADMK shawl while dancing alongside party supporters during the political gathering.
Political Complaints and Previous Incident
Meanwhile, the opposition DMK party has filed a formal complaint with the returning officer, alleging that the teacher has been regularly visiting Viralimalai for "political work" beyond his educational duties. This development adds a layer of political contention to what began as a disciplinary matter within the education department.
This incident echoes a nearly identical situation that occurred in Thanjavur district just weeks prior. In that case, a 58-year-old government school headmistress was suspended after being filmed dancing to a song performed by actor-turned-politician Vijay at a TVK party event near Orathanadu. The headmistress, Krishnaveni, had danced to the song 'Kodampakkam area' from the 2005 movie Sivakasi, in which TVK president Vijay had acted.
Broader Implications for Government Employees
These back-to-back incidents raise significant questions about the boundaries between government employment and political expression in Tamil Nadu. Both cases involve educators in government or government-aided institutions facing consequences for their visible participation in political events. The timing during election season adds to the sensitivity of these situations, with authorities demonstrating little tolerance for what they perceive as violations of service conduct rules.
The education department's consistent response across both districts suggests a firm policy stance against government employees engaging in overt political activities, particularly when such actions are captured and disseminated through social media platforms. As election fervor continues in the state, these cases serve as cautionary examples for other public servants considering similar political displays.
