Rajasthan Government Enforces Daily Sports Period in Primary Schools
In a significant move to promote physical fitness among young students, Rajasthan's Education Minister Madan Dilawar announced on Monday that all government primary schools must conduct a mandatory daily sports period. The directive aims to ensure regular physical activity for students, addressing concerns that physical education sessions were often limited to just once or twice a week.
Mandatory Implementation and Timing
Minister Dilawar emphasized that the daily sports or physical activity sessions must be held either before or after the recess period. "From now on, sports or physical activities will be conducted daily for all classes. This can be before or after recess, but must be followed mandatorily in all schools, especially for primary classes," he stated. The minister instructed physical education teachers to strictly adhere to this new regulation to guarantee consistent student participation.
Clearing Playground Encroachments
To support this initiative, Dilawar has directed district collectors across Rajasthan to take immediate action to clear any encroachments on school playgrounds. "Instructions have also been issued to district collectors to remove encroachments from school playgrounds and to allocate land where such facilities do not exist," he added. This step is crucial to provide adequate space for students to engage in sports and physical activities safely and effectively.
Objectives and Broader Vision
The primary goal of this policy is to offer every child an opportunity to participate in sports, thereby supporting their overall physical development and well-being. The minister highlighted that the aim is to give every child an opportunity to participate in sports and support their physical development. By integrating daily physical activity into the school routine, the government hopes to foster a culture of fitness and health from an early age.
One District One Sport Initiative
In alignment with this move, the education department plans to identify talented students for block-level training as part of the 'One District One Sport' initiative. This program is designed to prepare students for district-level competitions by focusing on specific sports assigned to each district. The assignments include:
- Kabaddi: Ajmer, Chittorgarh, Nagaur, and Jaipur
- Women's Wrestling: Alwar and Bharatpur
- Volleyball: Barmer
- Football: Baran, Dausa, and Sawai Madhopur
- Basketball: Bhilwara, Jhalawar, Jhunjhunu, Pali, and Sikar
- Archery: Bikaner, Banswara, and Sirohi
- Athletics: Bundi, Churu, Jalore, Sriganganagar, Tonk, and Pratapgarh
- Hockey: Dungarpur, Dholpur, Hanumangarh, and Rajsamand
- Gymnastics: Jodhpur and Jaisalmer
- Wrestling: Kota
- Swimming: Udaipur
- Tennis-Ball Cricket: Karauli
This structured approach aims to nurture sports talent at the grassroots level, ensuring that students have access to specialized training and competitive opportunities.
The announcement marks a proactive step by the Rajasthan government to enhance the educational experience by prioritizing physical health alongside academic learning. By enforcing daily sports periods and securing playgrounds, the initiative seeks to create a more holistic development environment for primary school students across the state.
