In response to the ongoing severe cold wave and persistent dense fog, authorities in Gautam Buddha Nagar have announced an extension of school closures. All educational institutions across Noida and Ghaziabad will now remain shut until January 5, a decision taken to prioritise student safety.
Official Order Issued Amid Safety Concerns
The District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) for Gautam Buddha Nagar issued the official directive on Friday. The order mandates the four-day closure extension for a wide range of schools. It applies uniformly to all government, government-aided, and private unaided secondary and higher secondary schools. This includes institutions affiliated with major national and international boards such as CBSE, ICSE, and IB operating within both districts.
An official explained the rationale behind the precautionary measure. "The move aims to protect students from health risks associated with low temperatures and poor visibility, especially during early morning travel hours," they stated. Officials highlighted that dense fog continues to drastically reduce morning visibility, while daytime temperatures have also stayed unusually low, creating a harsh environment.
Focus on Student Health and Commute Safety
The decision was heavily influenced by the timing of school transport and the challenging weather conditions. "Since buses ply early in the morning, it prompted concerns over student safety. Moreover, the weather conditions were not favourable for children to commute," the official added. The administration has instructed school authorities to ensure strict compliance with the order to avoid any risks.
The extension has received mixed reactions from parents. While many have welcomed the decision, seeing it as a necessary step to shield children from the harsh winter, others have expressed concerns about potential disruptions to the academic curriculum and the completion of the syllabus.
Regular Reviews and Future Decisions
The local administration has assured parents and schools that the situation is being monitored closely. Officials confirmed that weather conditions will be reviewed regularly, and further decisions regarding school operations beyond January 5 will be taken based on necessity and the prevailing situation. The primary focus remains the well-being and safety of students during this period of intense cold and reduced visibility.
