Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has openly acknowledged the significant challenges facing the state's education system while reaffirming his government's commitment to making education a top priority. Speaking at a public function in Sohra on Wednesday, the Chief Minister provided a candid assessment of the sector's complexities and outlined the government's approach to reform.
Systemic Challenges in Education Sector
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma did not shy away from addressing the deep-rooted problems affecting Meghalaya's education system. He identified systemic structural issues as the primary obstacle to delivering quality education that meets the state's aspirations. Despite substantial government spending on education, these challenges have persisted and hampered progress.
"The education sector has become highly complex due to long-standing structural problems," Sangma stated during his address. "Even with significant financial investments, these issues have prevented us from achieving the educational standards we aim for."
Restructuring Efforts and Child-Centric Approach
The Chief Minister revealed that the government has initiated measures to streamline and restructure the education system. One key strategy involves the rationalization of schools across the state, which authorities believe will lead to gradual improvements in educational outcomes.
Emphasizing the need for a fundamental shift in perspective, Sangma urged educational institutions to adopt a child-centric approach. He called upon schools, teachers, and managing committees to place students at the heart of all decision-making processes.
"Students should be the guiding force behind every educational decision," the Chief Minister emphasized. "Our focus should not be on what benefits teachers or institutions, but rather on what truly serves the best interests of the child."
Inauguration of Ramakrishna Mission College
The Chief Minister's remarks came during the inauguration of the Ramakrishna Mission College in Sohra, marking a significant milestone for education in Northeast India. This institution represents the first college established by the Ramakrishna Mission in the entire northeastern region and will be affiliated with Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
The inauguration ceremony attracted several prominent figures, including Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Swami Achyuteshananda, Trustee of RK Math & Mission. The presence of these dignitaries underscored the importance of the new educational institution for the region.
Sangma praised the Ramakrishna Mission for its substantial contributions to holistic education and character development. "The Ramakrishna Mission has consistently nurtured children to become disciplined, hardworking, and empathetic citizens with strong moral values," he noted.
Government Support and Future Collaboration
The Chief Minister assured that the state government would address infrastructure challenges faced by Mission schools, including issues related to road connectivity, electricity supply, and water access. He promised that these matters would be handled on a case-by-case basis to ensure practical solutions.
Sangma emphasized that investing in human capital represents the most valuable investment any government or society can make. Expressing gratitude for the Mission's dedication to education, he affirmed the government's commitment to collaboration.
"The government will work closely with you to ensure quality education for the children and youth of our state," Sangma declared, signaling a new chapter of cooperation between the state government and educational institutions.
