Maharashtra Upgrades 412 Govt Schools as Adarsh Shalas in First Phase
Maharashtra Upgrades 412 Govt Schools as Adarsh Shalas

Maharashtra Government Launches Major School Upgrade Initiative

The state government of Maharashtra has announced a significant move to enhance the quality of education by upgrading 412 government schools across the state. These institutions will be transformed into Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Adarsh Shalas as part of the first phase of a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing 1,500 government schools in total.

Initiative Conceived Under Leadership Guidance

This ambitious initiative was conceived by the school education state minister, Dr Pankaj Bhoyar, under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and school education minister Dadaji Bhuse. The plan is designed to elevate the standard of government schools, particularly benefiting students from low-income and rural backgrounds.

District-Wise Allocation of Upgraded Schools

The upgrade will see a varied distribution across districts in Maharashtra. Nagpur district will have 11 schools upgraded, while other Vidarbha regions show notable allocations: Wardha leads with 17 schools, followed by Chandrapur and Yavatmal with 12 each, Buldhana with 14, Amravati with 11, Gondia with 8, Gadchiroli and Bhandara with 6 each, and Akola and Washim with 4 each. On a statewide scale, Nashik has the highest allocation at 38 schools, with Pune following at 25.

Selection and Infrastructure Development

The selected schools include Samuh Sadan Kendra schools, PM Shri schools, and Vidyaniketan schools. Each will receive dedicated funds for physical and educational infrastructure improvements. To ensure continuity in education, government and local body schools under this scheme have been permitted to run classes up to Class 10 within the same institution.

Responsibility and Approval Process

Zilla Parishad chief executive officers have been tasked with preparing detailed development plans for each school. These plans are subject to approval by the education commissioner, ensuring a structured and accountable implementation process.

Enhanced Facilities for Girl Students

A key feature of the upgrade is the focus on facilities for girl students. Each school will be equipped with a Pink Room—a separate rest space for girls in Class 7 to Class 12 during menstruation—along with improved toilets and clean drinking water. Additionally, one school per district from among the Adarsh Shalas will be designated as a Sports Prabodhini to promote sports alongside academics.

Context and Broader Educational Goals

This scheme follows the Mukhyamantri Vigyan Wari initiative, which was launched earlier to build scientific interest among students. The current upgrade aims to raise the overall standard of government schools, making them more conducive to learning and development for all students, especially those from underserved communities.
