Students Stage Protest Over Lizard Contamination in College Canteen Drink

In a shocking incident at Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College in Trichy, students led by the Students Federation of India (SFI) organized a protest on Thursday. The demonstration was triggered by the alleged discovery of body parts of a lizard inside a soft drink bottle sold at the college canteen.

Discovery of Contamination and Health Concerns

The issue came to light when students noticed foreign particles floating in bottles purchased from the canteen. Upon closer inspection, these particles were identified as resembling lizard remains, causing immediate alarm among the student body. Several students who had consumed the drink reported feeling unwell, with symptoms including nausea and discomfort, which heightened concerns over food safety and hygiene standards.

As a result of the contamination, around six students were admitted to Trichy Government Hospital for medical treatment. The incident has raised serious questions about the quality control measures in place at the college canteen and the potential health risks posed to students.

Protest and Demands for Action

Condemning the alleged lapse in hygiene and food safety, the SFI led a demonstration in front of the college campus. The protest aimed to draw attention to the negligence and demand accountability from the authorities. SFI district president G K Mohan, along with other functionaries, actively participated in the protest, emphasizing the need for immediate and stringent measures.

Students have urged the district administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Their demands include:

  • A comprehensive probe to determine how the contamination occurred.
  • Strict action against those responsible for the hygiene failure.
  • Implementation of improved food safety protocols to prevent future recurrences.

Authorities Respond with Inquiry

In response to the outcry, college authorities have initiated an inquiry in collaboration with officials from relevant departments. Sources indicate that the investigation is focused on identifying the source of the contamination and assessing the overall food handling practices at the canteen. The goal is to ensure such incidents do not happen again and to restore student confidence in the campus facilities.

This incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining high hygiene standards in educational institutions, where the health and well-being of students must be a top priority. The ongoing inquiry is expected to provide clarity and lead to corrective actions in the coming days.
