KU Mess Bill Scandal: SFI Demands Probe into Alleged Fund Misuse

In a significant development at Kakatiya University (KU) in Hyderabad, members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) have raised serious concerns over alleged financial irregularities in the clearance of mess bills. On Friday, the student organization called for a detailed inquiry and immediate action against those responsible for the purported misuse of funds intended for student welfare.

Allegations of Financial Mismanagement

The SFI has highlighted multiple troubling issues, including the alleged misuse of mess funds, prolonged delays in bill payments, and the booking of bills under dummy student names. According to the organization, these practices are directly impacting the quality and availability of meals for genuine hostel residents.

S Rajinikanth, president of the association, emphasized the severity of the situation. "Allegations of misuse of mess funds meant for students, keeping bills pending, and booking bills under dummy names are extremely worrying. Over 70% of hostel students are already facing severe difficulties due to delays in indents and scholarships. In such a situation, misuse of mess funds is nothing but depriving students of their right to food," he stated.

Call for Immediate Action

SFI leaders have pointed fingers at university officials, alleging negligence in overseeing the mess operations. T Nagaraju, another representative from the association, demanded swift measures. "This is happening due to the negligence of officials at KU. An immediate, comprehensive and independent probe should be conducted, and criminal cases booked against those responsible," he asserted.

The students have put forth a clear set of demands to address the crisis:

  • Immediate clearance of all pending mess bills and scholarship amounts to alleviate student hardship.
  • Formation of a hostel monitoring committee that includes student representatives to ensure transparency.
  • Implementation of a transparent online billing system to prevent future irregularities and enhance accountability.

Broader Implications for Student Welfare

The allegations come at a time when a majority of hostel students are reportedly struggling with financial constraints due to delayed scholarships and indents. The SFI argues that the alleged fund mismanagement exacerbates these challenges, effectively denying students their basic right to nutritious food.

This incident underscores the need for robust oversight mechanisms in educational institutions to safeguard student resources. As the demand for an independent probe gains momentum, all eyes are on Kakatiya University's administration to respond promptly and ensure justice for the affected students.
