In a major educational initiative aimed at strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning, the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), in partnership with the Bharti Airtel Foundation, has launched specialized math and science clubs across 173 government secondary and senior secondary schools in Ranchi district. This pilot project, implemented under the National Avishkar Abhiyan, was officially inaugurated on Thursday with a comprehensive orientation program for educators.

Structured Platform for Hands-On Learning

The newly established clubs are designed to create structured platforms within school environments where students can actively engage in hands-on activities, peer-to-peer learning, and innovative projects focused on mathematics and science. Out of approximately 3,000 government schools in Ranchi district, these 173 institutions have been carefully selected for the initial phase, with plans for gradual expansion to more schools in the future.

The launch program included detailed orientations on the organizational structure and operational functioning of the proposed clubs, along with the rollout of standardized operating procedures (SOPs). Special training sessions were conducted to familiarize teachers with activity-based pedagogical approaches and practical methods for integrating experiential learning into regular mathematics and science classrooms.

Educational Leadership Emphasizes Transformative Impact

Rajesh Prasad, Director of Secondary Education in Jharkhand, emphasized the transformative potential of these specialized clubs. "Math and science clubs can play a vital role in making learning more engaging and meaningful for students," he stated. "By providing structured opportunities for experimentation and collaborative activities, these clubs will help develop analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a sustained interest in scientific inquiry among young learners."

Avinav Kumar, State Head (Quality) at JEPC, elaborated on the pedagogical philosophy underpinning the initiative. "At the primary education level, science often appears magical to children. In Classes 6 to 8, our focus shifts to nurturing natural curiosity and encouraging students to ask questions about the world around them. By the time students reach Classes 9 to 12, the ultimate aim is to enable them to innovate, create, reproduce, and replicate scientific prototypes through hands-on experience."

Strategic Implementation and Future Vision

The collaboration between JEPC and Bharti Airtel Foundation represents a strategic effort to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in STEM education. The initiative aligns with broader national educational objectives under the National Avishkar Abhiyan, which seeks to foster scientific temper and innovation capabilities among school students across India.

Key components of the program include:
