College Principal and Assistant Arrested in Virudhunagar Student Suicide Case
In a tragic development that has shaken the educational community, police in Virudhunagar district have arrested the principal and an office assistant of a private college in connection with the suicide of a 19-year-old student. The arrests were made on Tuesday following intense protests and demands for justice from student groups.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The deceased student, identified as Solairani, was a second-year Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) student at the private college. According to preliminary reports, she ended her life at her residence on Monday, January 19, after allegedly facing severe reprimand from the college administration. The disciplinary action was reportedly related to her relationship with a youth, which the college authorities had objected to.
Massive Student Protests Erupt
The student's suicide triggered immediate and massive protests across the campus and surrounding areas. Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and other student groups blocked roads and laid siege to the college premises, demanding immediate action against those responsible. The protests highlighted growing concerns about institutional pressure and mental health issues among students.
Administrative Action and Police Investigation
Following the incident, Kalaiselvi, the regional joint director of collegiate education in Madurai, conducted a preliminary inquiry. Based on her findings, the college management terminated the services of Manimaran, the office assistant who was reportedly involved in the incident. Meanwhile, the Sivakasi Town Police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the victim's family.
The police initially filed the case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and later altered it to Section 108 of the BNS, which deals specifically with abetment of suicide. The charges were filed against principal Ashok and office assistant Manimaran.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
On Tuesday, both Ashok and Manimaran were arrested by the police in connection with the case. They were subsequently produced before the Sivakasi judicial magistrate. Following the court proceedings, both accused were released on bail, though the investigation continues.
