Major SSC Exam Impersonation Racket Uncovered in Solapur District

In a significant breach of academic integrity, authorities in Maharashtra have registered a case against ten individuals, including one minor, for allegedly impersonating enrolled students during the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination's Marathi language paper on Friday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the state's education system, highlighting organized cheating attempts.

Exam Centre Scrutiny Reveals Mismatched Identities

The fraudulent activity was detected at the Shri Balkrishna Vidyalaya examination centre in Nandeshwar, which operates under the jurisdiction of the Mangalwedha police station in Solapur district. This centre accommodates approximately 200 students for their board examinations. The matter came to light when vigilant invigilators, while cross-checking examination hall tickets and school identity cards, noticed discrepancies between the photographs of some enrolled candidates on their official rolls and the individuals actually writing the papers.

Authorities promptly downloaded authentic hall tickets from the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) website for verification. This digital confirmation revealed that several candidates had presented forged hall tickets, confirming the impersonation scheme.

Dummy Candidates from Recruitment Academy

Investigations have revealed that all the dummy candidates are affiliated with a Sangli-based academy that specializes in preparing candidates for recruitment examinations for police, army, and forest cadre positions. The students they impersonated are all from the Sutar International School located in Laxmi Dahiwadi, Solapur. In a decisive move, the police have also booked the original candidates, who will be barred from participating in the remaining subjects of the ongoing SSC examinations, according to a senior MSBSHSE official.

Legal Action and Police Investigation

The case has been registered under sections 319, 336, and 337 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Among the ten accused, nine are adults above 18 years of age. These nine individuals were produced before the Mangalwedha court, which has remanded them in police custody until February 24 to facilitate further investigation.

Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Laturkar of the Mangalwedha police provided detailed insights into the operation. "The dummy candidates were strategically seated across various examination halls at the centre," he explained. "In one of the eight halls, an invigilator observed that the photo on a hall ticket did not match the provided list, and the candidate appeared older. This triggered a comprehensive check throughout the centre, leading to the discovery of nine male and one female minor impersonating students from a single school for the Marathi language paper."

API Laturkar further noted that the dummy candidates claim they have not received payment for their involvement, but police are probing deeper into potential financial motives and broader networks.

Suspected Organized Racket and Geographic Spread

Police suspect that the Sangli academy may be operating an organized racket of dummy candidates. The individuals involved hail from diverse locations including Sangli, Ichalkaranji, and Athani in Belagavi district of Karnataka. They are reportedly enrolled in a residential course at the academy, suggesting a structured arrangement.

The identified adult dummy candidates are:

  • Vishwajeet alias Babu Chavan
  • Vaibhav Pawar
  • Sachin Bodhgire
  • Prakas Adalgi
  • Samadhan Rupnar
  • Akash Patil
  • Prakash Birajdar
  • Rohit Bandal
  • Dharmatma Azad

All were found in possession of school identity cards and forged examination hall tickets, indicating premeditated planning. This case underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining examination integrity and highlights the need for enhanced vigilance during high-stakes academic assessments.
