The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has officially invited online applications for the sixth phase of the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) for the academic session 2027-28. This programme is being conducted in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to significantly enhance the quality of teacher education across India.
Application Timeline and Process
According to the official notification, eligible institutions can submit their applications online from May 8, 2026, until May 31, 2026, with the deadline set at 11:59 PM. Applications will only be accepted through the official NCTE portal. The council has urged multidisciplinary institutions that meet the eligibility criteria to apply under Sections 14 and 15 of the NCTE Act, 1993.
Understanding NCTE
NCTE is a statutory body established under the National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993, and it began functioning on August 1, 1995. The organization is responsible for regulating teacher education in the country and ensuring that teacher training institutions maintain proper standards.
Eligibility Criteria
NCTE has specified that only institutions meeting the prescribed shortlisting criteria will be considered further. Applications from institutions that do not satisfy the required conditions will be rejected outright. The shortlisting rules were approved during the 69th General Body meeting of the council, which took place on May 5, 2026.
Focus on Better Teacher Education
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme is a key component of NEP 2020. The policy aims to improve teacher training by promoting integrated and multidisciplinary education. Through these programmes, the government intends to ensure that future teachers receive superior academic training.
Processing Fee
NCTE has stated that institutions applying for ITEP must pay the processing fee as per the NCTE Rules, 1997, and subsequent amendments. The council advises all institutions to complete the application process well before the deadline to avoid any last-minute issues.
