UPSIFS Forges Strategic Partnerships to Enhance Forensic Science Education
The Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences (UPSIFS) has announced a significant initiative to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application in forensic education. The institute is set to collaborate with four prominent educational and administrative institutions to provide its students with invaluable opportunities for internships, research, and hands-on exposure.
Collaborating Institutions and Their Roles
These four institutions include:
- Maharana Pratap Institute of Technology (MPIT), Gorakhpur
- Dhirubhai Ambani University (DAU), Gandhinagar
- UP Prisons Administration and Reform Services (UPPARS)
- King George's Medical University (KGMU)
According to a government spokesperson, these collaborations are designed to offer students high-level, practical training that goes beyond traditional classroom instruction.
Transforming Forensic Education from Theory to Practice
Emphasizing that forensic education has historically been heavily theoretical, UPSIFS Director GK Goswami highlighted the transformative impact of these partnerships. "Our goal is to make students job-ready," Goswami stated. He explained that through these collaborations, forensic science students will gain direct exposure to real-world case studies, postmortem procedures, medico-legal aspects, and the practical dimensions of criminal investigation.
For instance, the partnership with King George's Medical University (KGMU) will allow students to closely observe postmortem procedures, including the entire process from inquest to autopsy. "This will help them understand the circumstances of death and how scientific analysis is conducted," Goswami added, underscoring the critical hands-on learning experience.
In-Depth Exposure to Criminal Justice and Prison Systems
UPSIFS Deputy Director Chiranjeev Mukherjee detailed the benefits of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UP Prisons Administration and Reform Services (UPPARS). This collaboration will enable students to visit jails and conduct case studies of inmates. "Students will learn about bail processes, prison environments, and the social and psychological factors behind crimes," Mukherjee said.
He further emphasized that this exposure is essential for budding forensic experts, as it helps them understand the root causes of criminal behavior, thereby enriching their analytical skills and professional preparedness.

The initiative represents a comprehensive approach to forensic science education, integrating technical medical training with socio-legal insights. By partnering with institutions like MPIT and DAU, UPSIFS aims to incorporate advanced technological and research methodologies into its curriculum.
These collaborations are expected to not only enhance the practical skills of students but also foster innovation and research in forensic sciences, ultimately contributing to more effective criminal investigation and justice delivery in the region.
