UP Government Unveils State Institutional Ranking Framework for Technical Education

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards improving the quality of technical education by announcing the first-ever State Institutional Ranking Framework (SIRF) for degree-awarding institutions. This initiative, revealed on Monday, is designed to assess and rank technical colleges across the state, fostering a competitive environment to elevate educational standards.

Top Performers in the SIRF Rankings

In the inaugural rankings, Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology in Sultanpur emerged as the top performer, scoring an impressive 234 points out of a possible 300. Following closely, Rajkiya Engineering College in Azamgarh secured second place with 206 points, while Rajkiya Engineering College in Kannauj took third with 202 points. The evaluation period for these rankings spanned from July to December 2025, providing a comprehensive assessment of institutional performance.

Framework Design and Objectives

The technical education department modeled SIRF after the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to systematically evaluate degree-level institutions under its purview. By using common parameters, the framework assigns rankings to help institutions compete positively and identify areas for improvement. Additional Chief Secretary of Technical Education, Narendra Bhooshan, emphasized that SIRF serves as a standardized quality benchmarking tool. He stated, "This framework will enhance teaching-learning processes, focus on infrastructure development, and strengthen hands-on learning. It aims to promote workshops, seminars, research culture, and outcome-based accountability, enabling targeted interventions for better educational outcomes."
