Tamil Nadu Government Distributes Laptops to 2,040 College Students in Chennai
In a significant move to boost digital literacy and academic performance, Health Minister Ma Subramanian distributed laptops to 2,040 college students on Monday. The event took place at Guru Nanak College on Velachery Main Road in Chennai, under the state government's flagship 'Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil' scheme.
Statewide Rollout of Ambitious Initiative
This distribution drive was held in the Adyar zone, specifically ward 172, as part of a comprehensive statewide rollout. The scheme was officially launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin on January 5 at the Nandambakkam Trade Centre, marking a pivotal step in the government's educational outreach efforts.
The 'Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil' initiative has set an ambitious target to distribute a total of 10 lakh laptops to students across Tamil Nadu. The beneficiaries include those pursuing diverse courses such as:

- Agriculture
- Medical studies
High-Tech Specifications and Pre-Installed Software
The laptops provided under this scheme are equipped with advanced hardware and software to ensure students have access to modern technology. Key specifications include:
- Processors: Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3
- Memory: 8GB RAM
- Storage: 256GB SSD
- Operating Systems: Windows 11 Home and BOSS Linux
In addition to the robust hardware, the devices come with MS Office 365 pre-installed, along with a six-month subscription to the AI tool Perplexity Pro. This inclusion aims to familiarize students with artificial intelligence applications, enhancing their technical proficiency.
