Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid at an electronic assembly unit in Coimbatore on Wednesday, seizing 24 LED televisions and 41 Bluetooth speakers valued at approximately Rs 17 lakh for alleged violations of the BIS Act, 2016.
The enforcement operation, carried out by the BIS Coimbatore Branch Office, targeted Grace Lazerjet Technologies, which sells products under the brand name “Eye Plus”. The raid was based on credible information regarding suspected non-compliance with mandatory BIS registration requirements.
The enforcement team included Vinith Kumar G, scientist-E/director; Divya S, scientist-D/joint director; and Gautam Chand Soni, scientist-C/deputy director. The search was conducted under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016.
During the inspection, the unit was found storing and selling LED televisions and Bluetooth speakers without valid BIS registration. The seized items included multiple models of televisions and speakers, with a collective value of about Rs 17 lakh.
Ramesh K, director and head of the BIS Coimbatore branch office, stated that action would be initiated against the offender under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. He noted that Section 29 stipulates that a first contravention is punishable with imprisonment up to two years, or a fine of not less than Rs 2 lakh, which may extend up to 10 times the value of the goods, or both.
BIS advised consumers to ensure that televisions and Bluetooth speakers bear a genuine BIS registration mark and to verify registration validity using the BIS Care app by entering the R-number printed on the product.
