Singrauli Students Explore Cosmos with Professional Telescopes in CSR Initiative

In the tribal belt of Singrauli, the night sky is no longer confined to textbook pages. Government school students are now peering through professional telescopes to explore the cosmos firsthand, marking a groundbreaking shift in science education.

First-of-its-Kind Project Launched

In a pioneering initiative led by the district administration and funded through corporate CSR, two 10-inch telescopes have been installed at the excellence school in Baidhan. This allows students to directly observe celestial bodies such as the moon, Saturn's rings, and distant nebulae, moving science learning beyond traditional textbooks.

Technical Support and Training

The project is implemented with technical support from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal. It aims to provide students with a practical understanding of astronomy. Teachers will also undergo specialized training to help them integrate observation-based learning into their classrooms effectively.

Singrauli collector Gaurav Benal told TOI, "A total of six such telescopes will be installed in schools across the three tehsils of the district. Two telescopes will be installed in each tehsil. It will be done in schools which have the highest number of enrolments. Besides, training will be provided to the teachers from IISER Bhopal."

Enhancing Astronomical Curiosity

The telescopes, equipped with high-precision mirrors, enable clear viewing of planetary features and deep-sky objects, an experience most students have never had before. Benal emphasized, "The aim is to infuse astronomical curiosity in children. Normally, even after we complete Class 12, we have not seen any heavenly body; we have only seen its pictures in books."

Expansion Plans and Benefits

Officials have announced that similar facilities will soon be established in model schools in Chitrangi and Deosar blocks. This initiative is expected to particularly benefit students in remote tribal areas, offering them exposure to modern science tools and sparking interest in space studies at an early age.

By bringing the cosmos into classrooms, this CSR-funded project not only enhances educational opportunities but also inspires a new generation of astronomers in Singrauli's tribal communities.
