SGSITS Indore Establishes Quantum Computing Centre with Rs 1 Crore Grant

In a significant leap towards practical quantum technology education, the Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) in Indore is set to establish a Centre of Excellence in quantum computing. This initiative, backed by a Rs 1 crore grant under the National Quantum Mission, aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications in this cutting-edge field.

From Theory to Hands-On Practice

Approved by the Department of Science and Technology, the centre will serve as a dedicated teaching and research laboratory. It is designed to provide undergraduate students with hands-on training in core quantum concepts such as qubits, entanglement, and superposition. Students will gain practical experience using industry-relevant tools like Qiskit and Cirq, preparing them for emerging careers in quantum technologies.

The project was proposed by Professor JT Andrew Thomas, with Dr Vipin Kaushik, Dr AS Bais, and Lokesh Jain as key members. Professor Thomas emphasized that the initiative will integrate theoretical knowledge with experimentation, enabling students to develop a deeper understanding of advanced technologies through direct engagement.

Experiential Learning and Interdisciplinary Focus

Unlike conventional instructional methods, the centre is structured to promote experiential learning through various innovative approaches:

  • Hackathons to foster creative problem-solving
  • Interdisciplinary coursework blending physics, computer science, and engineering
  • Research-based projects addressing real-world challenges

Students will engage in problem-solving exercises across multiple domains, including quantum computing, communication, sensing, and materials science. Faculty members highlight that this approach will strengthen analytical abilities and equip students with the skills needed for global opportunities in frontier technologies.

Boosting Research and Innovation Ecosystem

Director Neetesh Purohit noted that the approval reflects the institute's growing research ecosystem and commitment to future-ready education. He stated that such initiatives are crucial for equipping students with advanced skills and enhancing India's position in global technological advancements.

The centre is also expected to encourage innovation and startup activity by providing a platform for students to develop ideas into viable projects and collaborate with industry partners. This aligns with broader goals of fostering entrepreneurship and practical application of quantum research.

Additional Funding for Healthcare Innovation

In a related development, SGSITS has secured Rs 34 lakh from the All India Council for Technical Education for a separate project. This funding supports the development of a handheld, non-invasive blood glucose monitoring device using opto-MEMS technology. The device aims to offer a painless and accessible solution for diabetes management, showcasing the institute's diverse research capabilities beyond quantum computing.

Together, these initiatives underscore SGSITS's role in advancing both quantum technologies and healthcare innovations, contributing to India's scientific and technological progress on multiple fronts.
