Punjab Student Alisha Rani Earns Spot in Prestigious Sakura Science High School Program 2026 in Japan
In a remarkable achievement for the state of Punjab, Alisha Rani, a Class XII student from Govt Senior Secondary Smart School (Girls) in Barnala, has been selected for the highly competitive Sakura Science High School Program 2026 in Japan. This prestigious opportunity places her among an elite group of 56 students chosen from across India, with Alisha being one of only three representatives from Punjab for this week-long educational tour.
National Recognition and Academic Excellence
The selection was made by the department of school education and literacy, which operates under the Union ministry of education, highlighting the national significance of this program. Scheduled from May 24 to 30, 2026, the visit is designed to provide students with invaluable exposure and advanced knowledge in the fields of science and technology, fostering international collaboration and learning.
Alisha expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming experience, stating that it will offer her a unique opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in science and technology. She also extended her heartfelt gratitude to her school principal and teachers for their unwavering support and guidance throughout her academic journey.

Barnala deputy commissioner Harpreet Singh praised this achievement, describing it as a significant opportunity for students to advance in science and technology domains. Echoing this sentiment, Barnala district education officer (secondary) Suneet Inder Singh emphasized that selections for the Sakura Science Program are conducted at the national level, based strictly on academic excellence.
Alisha's selection is a testament to her consistent academic performance. She has previously qualified for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination and has been receiving an annual scholarship of Rs 12,000 since Class VIII.
