A second-year BTech student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra died by suicide in her hostel room on Thursday, leading to significant unrest among the student body. In response, the institute has declared an 18-day vacation, effective immediately and lasting until May 4, to address the escalating tensions on campus.
Fourth Tragic Incident in Two Months
This heartbreaking event marks the fourth suicide at NIT Kurukshetra within the past two months, raising serious concerns about student well-being and mental health support systems. The student, identified as Diksha Dubey, was found hanging in her room by hostel mates, who promptly alerted authorities. Police officials, led by Kurukshetra SP Nitish Aggarwal, shifted the body to LNJP Hospital for a postmortem examination before handing it over to the grieving family.
Investigation Underway Amidst Campus Tensions
Police have confirmed that the cause of the incident is currently under investigation. SP Nitish Aggarwal provided insights into the recent cases, stating, "We have closely monitored all cases. The first one in February involved a male student from a tribal area who faced financial troubles and stress. The second incident had different reasons, as did the death reported last week. However, this girl was different—she was among the toppers and had a good track record. We are still investigating the reason." This statement highlights the complexity and varied circumstances surrounding these tragedies.
Institute's Response and Preventive Measures

NIT spokesperson Gian Bhushan emphasized the institute's deep concern, saying, "The institute is deeply concerned and immediate steps are being undertaken."
