NIT Goa Proposes Upskilling Initiative for ITI Students, Highlights Academic Achievements

In a significant move to bolster skill development in Goa, NIT Goa director Omprakash Jaiswal announced that the institute has submitted a proposal to the state government to provide upskilling training to ITI students. Speaking at the 11th convocation ceremony, Jaiswal emphasized NIT Goa's commitment to contributing to the region's growth through educational and capacity-building initiatives.

Comprehensive Training and Campus Outreach

Jaiswal stated that the proposal aims at enhancing skill development and capacity building across various sectors, with NIT Goa ready to assist in all possible aspects. He revealed that approximately 1,000 high school students have already visited the campus to gain exposure to science and technology, upgrading their knowledge through interactive sessions and demonstrations.

Academic Expansion and Innovation

The director highlighted several new academic developments, including the introduction of three MSc programs starting from the new academic year. Additionally, NIT Goa is set to launch its startup and incubation cell shortly, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among students and faculty.

On the research front, Jaiswal reported that the institute has been granted 22 patents so far, with eight more currently under process, showcasing its strong focus on technological advancements and intellectual property.

Strong Placement Record and Scholarships

Despite concerns about a potential recession, BTech graduates from NIT Goa have achieved an impressive 82% placement rate, reflecting the institute's robust industry connections and quality education. Jaiswal also noted that the institute has begun offering post-doctoral scholarships over the last two years, further supporting advanced research and academic pursuits.

Implementation of NEP 2020 and Curriculum Enhancements

NIT Goa has started implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the academic year 2023-24. The new curriculum includes minor programs and interdisciplinary courses, such as those related to the Indian knowledge system and liberal arts. Examples of these courses are:

  • Health and Happiness
  • Ancient Economic Thought: Indian Perspectives through Kautilya and Arthashastra
  • Vedic Mathematics
  • Science and Technology in Vedic Literature
  • Professional Ethics and Universal Human Values and Dramaturgy

Furthermore, the institute has adopted flexible and interdisciplinary learning approaches, skill development modules, industry-oriented training, an academic bank of credits, and credit transfer systems, as outlined by the director. These initiatives aim to provide a holistic and modern education aligned with global standards and local needs.
