The Karnataka School Education Department has announced the introduction of STEAM-based classes in all state-run public schools, starting from the upcoming academic session. The initiative aims to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics into the curriculum, with a specific focus on hands-on learning in robotics and coding.
Focus on Skill Development
According to an official from the School Education Department, the program is designed to improve students' problem-solving abilities and critical thinking. The official stated, “This is meant to cultivate interest in science and technology, besides kindling their creative spirit.” The classes will be mandatory for students in grades 6 through 10, with an estimated 1.2 million students expected to participate across the state.
Curriculum and Implementation
The curriculum will include basic robotics, block-based coding, and project-based learning modules. Teachers will undergo specialized training to deliver the content effectively. The department has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore for the first year to procure equipment, develop teaching materials, and conduct training sessions. The program will be rolled out in phases, beginning with 500 schools in the first quarter.
Expected Impact
Education experts have welcomed the move, noting that STEAM education prepares students for future careers in technology and engineering. The initiative also aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning and vocational skills. The department plans to monitor progress through regular assessments and feedback from schools.
The announcement was made on 27 June 2026, with implementation slated for the 2026–2027 academic year. Further details on the schedule and resources are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
