Mumbai NGO Mobilizes Rs 1 Crore in Zakat to Tackle Educational Dropouts Among Underprivileged Children
In a significant philanthropic effort, the Mumbai-based non-governmental organization Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) has successfully collected Rs 1 crore in zakat funds. This initiative is specifically aimed at preventing school dropouts among economically disadvantaged children, addressing a critical issue in educational access and equity.
Rapid Fundraising During Ramzan Supports Nationwide Mission
The impressive sum of Rs 1 crore was amassed in just 15 days during the holy month of Ramzan, highlighting the community's strong commitment to charitable giving. Zakat, a fundamental pillar of Islam, requires Muslims to donate 2.5% of their annual savings to charity, and this collection demonstrates its powerful impact when channeled systematically.
AMP President Aamir Edresy announced this achievement at a recent function in Mumbai, emphasizing that the funds are part of the organization's ambitious "Mission 10K Futures." This nationwide campaign seeks to mobilize 10,000 donors across 200 districts in India to provide financial support to 10,000 students, with each recipient receiving Rs 10,000.
Addressing Educational Backwardness Through Direct Aid
Edresy pointed to several authoritative reports, including the Sachar Report, which have identified high dropout rates as a primary factor contributing to the educational backwardness observed in Muslim communities. "We are determined to eradicate this malaise by extending monetary assistance directly to the poor and orphaned students," he stated.
The collected zakat funds will be disbursed directly to the schools of deserving students, ensuring transparency and effectiveness in the aid process. This approach aims to remove financial barriers that often force children from low-income families to abandon their education.
Leveraging Technology for Philanthropic Impact
Prior to this campaign, AMP launched IndiaZakat.com, India's first zakat-based crowdfunding platform. This innovative digital tool is designed to strengthen collective zakat systems by facilitating easier donations and broader outreach, thereby enhancing the scale and efficiency of charitable efforts.
