Kalapila Summer Camp 2024 Kicks Off in Thiruvananthapuram
The third edition of the six-day Kalapila Summer Camp for school students has officially commenced at the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village in Vellar, near Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram. This innovative program is a collaborative effort between the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, aiming to blend creativity, culture, and fun into a transformative experience for young minds.
Fostering Creativity and Innovation Among Youth
Approximately 120 children, aged between 5 and 16, are participating in this year's camp. 'Kalapila' is specifically designed to nurture creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age. The camp goes beyond typical vacation activities by integrating art, craft, skills, and entrepreneurship to encourage individuality and innovative thinking.
To mark the inauguration, a striking replica of a traditional slate—historically used by children for scribbling letters—was installed at the venue. This artwork was designed by the renowned artist Parag Pantheerankavu. The participating children began their first day by drawing pictures on this slate, allowing them to freely express their artistic ideas and set a creative tone for the camp.
Engaging Workshops and Interactive Activities
The first day of the camp featured a variety of engaging activities. A puppetry show led by Parag Pantheerankavu and a theatre workshop conducted by Vipin Das Parappanangadi and Jithu Kodakkadu provided a novel and immersive experience for the children. These sessions are part of a broader curriculum that emphasizes problem-solving, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking.
According to T U Sreeprasad, the Chief Operating Officer of Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, the camp will offer a diverse range of workshops in the coming days. These include:
- Robotics Workshop: Introducing children to basic technology and engineering concepts.
- Pottery and Craft Workshops: Hands-on activities to develop artistic skills.
- Kalarippayattu: A traditional martial art form to promote physical fitness and discipline.
- Music Sessions: Encouraging musical expression and appreciation.
- Community Visit: Providing real-world insights and social engagement opportunities.
Supporting Entrepreneurship Development in Kerala
The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), established in 2006, plays a pivotal role in this initiative. KSUM is dedicated to entrepreneurship development and incubation activities across the state, and the Kalapila Summer Camp aligns with its mission to cultivate future innovators and business leaders from a young age.
Organizers highlight that the camp's interactive activities are strategically designed to promote essential skills such as problem-solving and creative thinking. By combining traditional arts with modern technologies like robotics, the program ensures a holistic approach to learning that prepares children for future challenges in an evolving world.
This camp not only offers a fun and educational break from routine but also serves as a foundational step in building a generation of creative and entrepreneurial individuals in Kerala.
