IIT Madras Pioneers Hybrid BS in Management and Data Science
In a significant move to bridge the skills gap in the data-driven economy, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has unveiled a groundbreaking undergraduate program. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Management and Data Science is designed to equip students with a powerful hybrid skillset that combines business acumen with analytical prowess.
Program Structure and Curriculum Design
Developed by the Department of Management Studies (DoMS), this innovative curriculum merges essential management disciplines including finance, marketing, economics, supply chain management, and business strategy with rigorous training in statistics, computational thinking, and data analysis. The program aims to cultivate professionals who can interpret complex data to derive actionable management insights and make informed business decisions.
The program follows an open-access policy with no age restrictions and no seat limitations, making IIT-quality education accessible to a broader demographic. The inaugural batch is scheduled to commence in June 2026, with applications being accepted until May 31, 2026.
Flexible Hybrid Learning Model
The BS in Management and Data Science adopts a hybrid delivery format to maximize accessibility. Core instructional components including lectures, tutorials, assignments, and doubt-clearing sessions will be conducted online through recorded videos and live virtual classes. Assessment components such as quizzes and term examinations will be administered in person at designated centers, typically scheduled on Sundays.
Students enjoy considerable flexibility in their learning journey, with the ability to select the number of courses per term according to their individual circumstances. This design enables learners to pursue the degree concurrently with other academic programs, professional commitments, or competitive examination preparation. The program requires completion of 142 credits for graduation.
Admission Process and Eligibility Criteria
Admission to the program follows a four-week qualifier process that includes foundational coursework in English, Mathematics for Data Science, Statistics, and Computational Thinking, culminating in an in-person examination. Eligibility extends to any candidate who has passed Class 12 or equivalent examination, regardless of academic stream. Current Class 11 students may also apply and join after completing their Class 12 requirements.
Candidates eligible for JEE Advanced in 2025 or 2026 receive direct entry to the foundation level, streamlining their admission pathway. Applications for the May 2026 qualifier opened on February 21, 2026.
Financial Considerations and Technical Requirements
The application fee structure for the qualifier process is tiered: Rs 4,000 for General and OBC candidates, Rs 2,000 for SC/ST and PwD candidates, and Rs 1,000 for SC/ST candidates who also have PwD status with 40% or more disability. A re-attempt fee applies for candidates wishing to retake the qualifier in the same term.
Tuition fees are calculated on a term-by-term basis according to the number of courses enrolled, providing students with financial control aligned with their study pace. Applicants must ensure access to a stable internet connection and a laptop or computer for online learning components, along with the ability to travel to designated examination centers for in-person assessments.
Career Prospects and Industry Relevance
Graduates of this program will receive a Bachelor of Science degree from IIT Madras and will be prepared for diverse career pathways across multiple sectors. The curriculum specifically targets the growing industry demand for professionals who can bridge business strategy with data analytics. Career opportunities span consulting, finance, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
As organizations increasingly prioritize data-driven decision-making, this program addresses the critical need for talent equipped with both managerial perspective and analytical capabilities. By offering a challenging yet flexible educational pathway, IIT Madras is positioning this program as an accessible gateway to careers in the expanding data economy.
