IIT Kharagpur Death: Grandfather Cites Situational Pressure

IIT Kharagpur Student's Death Sparks Allegations of Situational Pressure

The tragic death of third-year IIT Kharagpur student Jayveersinh Dodiya has taken a new turn as his grandfather, Sardarsinh, raised concerns about potential situational pressure from the institute or external influences, rather than academic stress. Dodiya died on Saturday after falling from his hostel terrace, prompting an ongoing investigation.

Grandfather's Claims and Family's Quest for Truth

Sardarsinh, who arrived in Kharagpur on Sunday with relatives to claim the body, stated, "He did not have any pressure. It was situational pressure from this college. This is my observation. Like, people not talking to you properly, or saying 'If you don't do this, I will do that'. If you say such things to a boy with 99 percentile, he might stay silent while being targeted." He added, "I don't believe he can die by suicide. If such pressure is put on them that there is no other way, only then does it happen."

He further speculated about outside forces, noting, "Though the institute claims that entry is restricted, there could be outside forces or influences. Jayveersinh spoke to his mother and grandmother on Friday and was fine. He had taken many exams. If someone says it's because of exams at IIT, I don't believe it." The family has not filed a written police complaint but emphasized their desire for the truth to emerge.

Institute's Response and Investigation

IIT Kharagpur has established a fact-finding committee to probe the circumstances surrounding Dodiya's death. Director Suman Chakraborty commented, "We are doing a 360-degree scan of the situation to learn and improve. The area where we are weakest and often unable to take action is the student's personal life — factors related to family and other personal matters."

In response to the incident, the institute has deployed counselors to every hostel. Dean of student well-being Arun Chakraborty said, "We talked to students on Saturday evening for a long time, telling them not to panic. Counsellors have been sent to every hostel." Preliminary police findings suggest suicide, but the investigation continues.

Background and Autopsy Details

Jayveersinh Dodiya was the only son in his family. His father, Randhirsinh, serves as a DSP in the Baroda CID (crime) of the Gujarat Police, while his mother is a homemaker. The autopsy was conducted at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on Sunday, as authorities work to determine the exact cause of death.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about student well-being in premier educational institutions, with calls for enhanced support systems to address both academic and personal challenges.
