The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is poised to make a significant mark in the chess community by hosting its inaugural FIDE-rated Open Rapid Chess tournament. This landmark event is scheduled for February 7, organized by the institute's Chess Club in a strategic collaboration with SBI General Insurance Company Ltd (SBI GIC), co-powered by SBI.
Venue and Format Details
The tournament will take place at the Yoga Hall within the New Students' Activity Centre (SAC) at IIT-Kanpur. Adhering to international standards, the competition will be conducted in a 9-round Swiss System format, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants.
Time Control and Regulations
In line with FIDE regulations, the event will follow a rapid time control of 10 minutes per player, with an additional 5 seconds increment per move. This format is designed to test players' strategic thinking and quick decision-making skills under pressure.
Lucrative Prize Pool
The tournament boasts an attractive cash prize distribution to motivate and reward top performers. The winner will be awarded Rs 40,000, while the second and third place finishers will receive Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively. Notably, cash prizes will extend up to the 20th rank, encouraging participation across various skill levels.
