IIM Mumbai Launches First Undergraduate Program in Digital Science and Business Management

In a significant expansion of its academic offerings, the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) has announced the launch of its first-ever undergraduate program. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Digital Science and Business Management will commence from the upcoming academic year, marking a pivotal moment for the prestigious institution.

Program Details and Admission Process

The four-year undergraduate course will initially be conducted at the Mumbai campus, with a planned batch size of 70 students. Originally intended for the proposed satellite campus in Pune, the program has been relocated to Mumbai for its inaugural year. Admission to this innovative program will be based on a combination of JEE Mains scores and personal interviews, with a weightage distribution of 70:30 respectively to determine the final merit list.

The program carries an annual fee structure estimated between Rs 6-7 lakh. Upon successful completion of the BS degree, students will have the unique opportunity to pursue a one-year MBA program at IIM Mumbai, aligning with recommendations outlined in the National Education Policy 2020.

Collaborative Approach and Curriculum Focus

This groundbreaking program is being offered in collaboration with IIT-Bombay and various industry partners, ensuring a robust curriculum that bridges technological expertise with business acumen. The course structure integrates cutting-edge technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, Internet of Things, and robotics with fundamental management disciplines such as operations, marketing, finance, and manufacturing.

Professor Manoj Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai, emphasized the program's vision during the institute's annual convocation ceremony. "This program brings together the most transformative technologies of recent times seamlessly integrated with the core pillars of management," Tiwari stated. "The course aims to create future-ready professionals who can operate at the intersection of technology and business leadership."

Broader Institutional Context

The launch of this undergraduate program reflects a broader trend among IIMs across India, with several premier management institutes venturing into standalone undergraduate offerings, many of which explore multidisciplinary areas beyond traditional management education. IIM Mumbai has indicated plans to introduce additional programs once the necessary infrastructure is fully established.

The announcement was made during IIM Mumbai's convocation ceremony, where 505 students graduated from the Mumbai campus following its formal recognition from NITIE. Among these graduates, 300 were from the general MBA program. The event was presided over by Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange, with Shashi Kiran Shetty, Chairperson of the institute's Board of Governors, also in attendance.

This strategic move positions IIM Mumbai at the forefront of management education innovation, responding to evolving industry demands for professionals equipped with both technological proficiency and business leadership capabilities.
