Tamil Nadu Minister Distributes Free Laptops to 284 College Students in Chennai
In a significant move to enhance digital literacy among students, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) Chairman P K Sekarbabu distributed free laptops to 284 students of Sri Kannika Parameswari Women's Arts and Science College on Tuesday. The event, held at the Bharathi Women's Arts and Science College campus on Prakasam Salai in Chennai, is part of the Tamil Nadu government's flagship 'Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil' (the world in your hands) scheme.
Boosting Digital Access Under State Initiative
The distribution ceremony marked a key step in the state's efforts to empower students with technology. Launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin on January 5, 2026, at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam, the 'Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil' scheme aims to distribute 10 lakh laptops at a total cost of 2,172 crore rupees. This ambitious initiative targets students enrolled in arts and science, engineering, agriculture, and medical colleges across Tamil Nadu.
