Engineering Admissions Surge in Chennai as Management Quota Enquiries Rise 20%
Colleges across Chennai are witnessing a significant surge in management quota admissions this year, with a notable 20% increase in enquiries compared to the previous academic session. This heightened interest comes even before the Class XII examination results have been declared, indicating early parental and student anxiety.
Top Courses Driving the Admission Rush
Computer Science Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering have emerged as the most sought-after disciplines among students and parents. According to college administrators, these courses are at the forefront of the current admission trend.
Abhay Meganathan, Vice-Chairman of the Rajalakshmi Group of Institutions, confirmed this shift. "There is a huge interest among students and parents for electronics and communication engineering this year. It is the new trend. Besides computer science, core engineering courses like mechanical engineering are in good demand," he stated.
Factors Fueling the Early Admission Scramble
Several factors are contributing to this early rush for management quota seats:
- Tough CBSE Exams: The challenging mathematics and physics papers in this year's CBSE examinations have heightened anxiety among parents, prompting them to secure seats early through management quotas.

Sai Prakash Leo Muthu, CEO of Sri Sairam Engineering College, detailed their counseling approach. "We have about 100 parents and students visiting our colleges every day. Most of them prioritize computer science and AI. Counselors brief them on different career options, including possible opportunities in courses such as ECE and mechanical engineering," he explained.
The counseling sessions often include success stories, such as examples of students who secured placements at companies like Volvo after completing Electronics and Communication Engineering programs.
Increased Queries and International Interest
R M Kishore, Vice-Chairman of RMK Engineering College, noted a substantial increase in management quota enquiries. "At our college, we see 20% to 30% more queries for management quota admissions. There is more interest in engineering courses due to the buzz around AI and expectations of new jobs," he reported.
Furthermore, international interest remains strong. P Deivasundari, Principal of SRM Easwari Engineering College, revealed that the institution received enquiries from more than 40 countries for the NRI quota this year. "Civil and mechanical engineering courses also got many queries this year," she added, highlighting the broad appeal of core engineering disciplines.
