Coimbatore is set to welcome one of Tamil Nadu's most ambitious educational landmarks next month with the inauguration of the Periyar Arivulagam public library complex. This eight-storey marvel, constructed at a cost of ₹301 crore, promises to redefine public access to knowledge and scientific learning in the region.
A Monument to Knowledge and Innovation
Spanning seven acres and executed by the Public Works Department, the Periyar Arivulagam will house an impressive collection of over 1.2 lakh books. The government has allocated substantial funds specifically for enriching this repository—₹50 crore for book procurement and an additional ₹5 crore for state-of-the-art IT infrastructure.
"If there's a library on a par with some of the best in the state, it would be this one," remarks G Ramesh, librarian at the District Central Library in RS Puram. He highlights the facility's modern amenities, noting, "It's got air-conditioned sections and more interactive learning areas for children. It's likely to draw in crowds."
Designed for Universal Accessibility
In a significant commitment to inclusivity, the library complex has been meticulously designed to be accessible to all citizens. Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar emphasizes, "We've taken care to ensure accessibility. There is one floor dedicated for the differently abled with wheelchair accessibility and Braille books."
This thoughtful design extends to educational utility. Malathi, headmistress of Sidhapudur Girls' High School, expresses her anticipation for the library's opening. "It will be incredibly helpful to students who learn through visual representations and experience. Though theories are taught, practical representations extend well to science-based topics," she says, suggesting that "it would be beneficial if the district administration allocates a half-day slot to schools for educational visits."
Exploring the Eight-Storey Knowledge Hub
The Periyar Arivlagam's layout is a carefully curated journey through science, literature, and innovation:
- Ground Floor: Features a planetarium and a 6,000 square foot science exhibit. A highlight is a special lift designed to simulate a space travel experience, accommodating 35 visitors at a time.
- First Floor: Dedicated to history and STEM education, this level includes a model of the Keeladi excavation site with artifacts and interactive learning models for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Second to Fourth Floors: These levels constitute the core library spaces. One floor is exclusively for Tamil books, while two are dedicated to English collections. They house children's literature, competitive examination materials, periodicals, and extensive reference works.
- Fifth and Sixth Floors: Designed as innovation hubs, these floors host incubation centers and centers of excellence targeting MSMEs, startups, and entrepreneurs. They also function as collaborative co-working spaces.
- Seventh Floor: The 'Future Gallery' science center showcases cutting-edge technology including artificial intelligence, robotics, and augmented and virtual reality experiences, alongside a comprehensive digital library.
Additional Amenities and Community Impact
Beyond its educational offerings, the complex includes practical amenities to accommodate visitors. An auditorium with seating for 350-400 people will host lectures, workshops, and cultural events. Ample parking is available for 181 cars and 451 two-wheelers, ensuring convenient access for all visitors.
With approximately 90% of civil work completed according to PWD officials, the Periyar Arivlagam stands as a testament to Tamil Nadu's investment in public education infrastructure. It represents not just a library, but a multifaceted community hub poised to become a cornerstone for learning, innovation, and accessibility in Coimbatore and beyond.
