AMET University Hosts Grand 15th Convocation Ceremony in Chennai
AMET University in Chennai marked a significant academic milestone on Thursday, 8 January 2026. The institution held its 15th Convocation Ceremony at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This event celebrated the achievements of graduating students and reinforced the university's commitment to maritime education.
Distinguished Guests and Ceremonial Proceedings
Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasaagam, Provost of AMET University, opened the ceremony with a warm welcome address. He greeted the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, dignitaries, graduating students, parents, and industry representatives. Following this, Prof. Dr. V. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor, presented the Annual Report. He detailed the university's academic accomplishments, research projects, industry partnerships, and institutional growth over the past year.
Dr. J. Ramachandran, Chancellor of AMET University, presided over the convocation. The event gained national prominence with the presence of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon'ble Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, as Chief Guest. He delivered the Convocation Address and personally awarded degrees to the graduating students.
Inspiring Addresses from Maritime Leaders
In his Convocation Address, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the strategic importance of the maritime sector. He stressed the need for skilled, future-ready professionals and highlighted the critical role of higher education institutions in national development. The Union Minister pointed to India's emergence as a global maritime power under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's leadership. He credited initiatives like Viksit Bharat, NEP 2020, Skill India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat for this progress.
Shri Sonowal specifically commended AMET University's industry-integrated education model. He praised its globally recognized Maersk Centre of Excellence, placement-linked admissions, and contributions to India's maritime human resources. The Minister also discussed transformational reforms in ports, shipping, shipbuilding, and green maritime technologies. He urged graduates to see themselves as nation builders who will enhance India's trade, energy security, sustainability, and global maritime standing.
Shri Shivas Kapoor, Chairman of the International Maritime Employers' Council (IMEC) in the United Kingdom and General Manager – Head of Crewing at Hafnia, Singapore, served as Guest of Honour. He delivered an address highlighting AMET University's global reputation for excellence in maritime education. Captain Kapoor noted the institution's strong foundation in discipline, values, and professionalism.
Drawing from his personal journey from cadet to industry leader, Captain Kapoor inspired graduates to remain curious, humble, and committed to continuous growth. He observed that the maritime industry is undergoing rapid transformation through decarbonisation, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence. However, he stressed that human judgment, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to safety will always remain central to maritime operations. He concluded by urging graduates to pursue lifelong learning, lead by example, respect fellow seafarers, and represent their university and nation with pride.
University Leadership and Academic Recognition
Dr. Rajesh Ramachandren, President of AMET University, delivered the Felicitation Address. He reaffirmed the institution's focus on academic quality, innovation, sustainability, and industry-aligned education. Dr. Ramachandren encouraged graduates to uphold responsible leadership and embrace lifelong learning.
The ceremony also recognized medal winners for their outstanding academic performance. More than 1,400 students, parents, special invitees, members of the Executive Council, Academic Council, Finance Committee, and industry delegates attended the convocation.
