NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide After Exam Cancellation

A 20-year-old woman, identified as Anshika, allegedly died by suicide in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar on Thursday. She had reportedly appeared for the NEET-UG examination that was later scrapped due to a paper leak. Police are investigating the incident.

Incident Details

Anshika lived with her family in an Azadpur JJ cluster. Police received a PCR call about a woman's body being brought to Kewal Park Shamshan Ghat. Rinku Sharma, a priest at the cremation ground, informed the police that the family claimed she was unwell for three to four days before her death. However, the family was unaware of legal procedures and brought the body directly for cremation. The body was taken into custody and shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem, said DCP (northwest) Akanksha Yadav.

Family's Account

Crime and forensic teams inspected the spot and interviewed the family. They revealed that Anshika had been preparing for the NEET examination for several years and appeared for the test this year, hoping for a good rank. Relatives said she was distressed after reports of the examination's cancellation due to a paper leak. In previous attempts, she missed clearing NEET by merely four marks.

"Her family said that she appeared for NEET in 2022 and 2023 too. The team has been told by the family about how distressed she was after the exam this year, and we are trying to ascertain what exactly drove her to take such a step," a senior officer said.

Emotional Impact

For Anshika, the exam was not just a test but a many-year marathon of discipline and sacrifice. This year, she was hopeful for a good rank. She often told her parents about getting admitted to a good medical college and building a stable future. She studied for hours in a small, dingy space.

Kumud Pandey, a relative, said: "She was preparing for NEET for the last three years with the dream of becoming a doctor. After the NEET exam cancellation, she became very depressed." Another relative added, "The girl was very good in academics. After she got to know about the paper leak and cancellation of the exam through the news, she went into depression."

The girl's maternal uncle added, "At the time of the incident, her brother and sister were in another room. A neighbour noticed something was wrong and alerted the family."
