CBSE Physics Exam Proves Challenging for Class XII Students in Chennai

Just three days after Class X CBSE students in Chennai left their exam centers in tears over a difficult mathematics paper, Class XII students encountered similar distress on Friday during the physics examination. The lengthy paper, combined with a heightened focus on numerical questions, disrupted the confidence of students who had previously excelled in school revisions, pre-board exams, and routine tutorial tests.

Student Reactions Highlight Exam Difficulties

Students reported that despite rigorous preparation, the physics exam presented a vastly different challenge compared to their practice sessions. A student from K S N Senior Secondary School expressed frustration, stating, "Pre-board models were nothing like this — today's demanded far more time." Many found the assertion and reasoning type questions, totaling three in the paper, to be particularly time-consuming. One student shared, "One or two options could be correct, and we had to read the sentences carefully before answering. I panicked and got two of them wrong."

Educators Acknowledge Increased Competency-Based Focus

School principals and senior teachers acknowledged that the CBSE has been gradually increasing the weightage of competency-based questions over recent years. P G Subramanian, principal of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, noted, "The paper was tougher compared to last year. It was lengthy, and some students may not have attempted all questions. Case study questions were long, and students needed more time. But all these should be expected in a standard paper. It reiterates that students have to be conceptually strong to score well."

Other educators echoed this sentiment. Haribabu, senior principal of Maharshi Vidya Mandir in Chetpet, pointed out that typically, such demanding papers requiring out-of-the-box thinking are reserved for Class XII. However, he observed, "This year, it applied to Class X students too," referencing the earlier mathematics exam that also posed significant challenges.

Broader Implications for CBSE Examination Trends

The recent experiences of both Class X and Class XII students in Chennai suggest a shift in CBSE examination patterns towards more rigorous, competency-based assessments. This trend emphasizes the need for students to develop strong conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills, rather than relying solely on rote memorization. As educators stress, adapting to these changes is crucial for academic success in the evolving educational landscape.
