Vijayawada: A second-year Intermediate student was wrongly declared failed in Botany despite securing full marks. The error occurred during the marks-entry process, prompting disciplinary action against the concerned lecturer. The incident was reported from Guntur district, where Karpaludi Kavya, a student from Chiluvuru village in Duggirala mandal, appeared for her Intermediate second-year Botany examination.
Error in Marks Entry
According to officials, Kavya secured 60 out of 60 in the subject. However, during the transfer of marks onto the OMR sheet used for digital processing, an error occurred while bubbling the score. Instead of recording 60 marks, only six marks were entered and subsequently scanned into the system, leading to the student being declared failed when results were declared. Following complaints and verification, the Board identified the discrepancy and corrected the student's result.
Disciplinary Action Taken
An Intermediate Board official said disciplinary action has been initiated against the lecturer responsible for the error, who was also fined Rs 7,500 and debarred from evaluation work for three years. The episode has raised concerns over safeguards in the evaluation and marks-entry process, particularly whether additional verification mechanisms are in place to detect manual errors before results are published.
This incident highlights the need for robust checks in the examination system to prevent such errors. The Board has assured that steps will be taken to improve the accuracy of marks entry. Students and parents are advised to verify results promptly and report any discrepancies to the authorities.
