Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has granted interim bail for 11 days to a 47-year-old engineer accused in a road rage assault case, allowing him to guide his twin daughters on their academic careers. The daughters, who recently scored exceptionally high in the JEE (Mains) 2026 exams, require their father's support during this critical phase.
Bail Granted for Daughters' Academic Future
Justice Sandesh Patil, presiding over the vacation bench, stated on Thursday that the twin daughters, at a crucial juncture in their academic careers, certainly need guidance from their father, who is also an engineer. They also require financial assistance at this time. The accused had sought 30 days of interim bail, but the court granted 11 days instead.
Background of the Case
The accused was arrested on March 23 in connection with a road rage incident on March 11. According to the FIR lodged by Borivli police on March 13, the accused, riding a two-wheeler, cut in front of a car driven by a 54-year-old businessman. When the businessman honked, the accused became enraged, abused him, assaulted him, and pushed him, causing a fall that resulted in a head injury. The victim underwent brain surgery and remains hospitalized with loss of eyesight. The accused was booked for voluntarily causing hurt and an act endangering life.
Daughters' Academic Achievements
The accused's advocate informed the court that his client has been in custody since March 23. During this period, the results of his daughters' JEE (Mains) 2026 exams were announced: one scored 99.89% and the other 99.68%. They are now preparing for the JEE (Advanced) exams and have registered for BITSAT 2026, scheduled from May 24-26. The advocate argued that the daughters need their father's guidance and financial support to make critical career decisions. He emphasized that if bail is not granted, the innocent twin daughters, who have brilliant academic records, would suffer.
Victim's Condition and Opposition to Bail
The victim's advocate opposed the bail, stating that his client lost his eyesight and remains in a precarious condition in the hospital. He urged the court not to show leniency, describing the offense as gruesome and the bail application as a mere attempt to secure release from jail.
Court's Decision
Justice Patil, considering the uncontroverted submissions about the daughters' high scores, remarked that they surely have brilliant careers ahead and their future should not be hampered by their father's absence. He directed the accused's release from May 16 to May 26 on a personal bond of Rs 20,000 with one or two sureties. Until sureties are furnished, the accused shall be released on a cash bail of Rs 1 lakh. The bail conditions require him to reside within the Malad police station's jurisdiction and submit daily attendance. He must surrender immediately on May 27 and shall not seek any further extension.
