Indian Railways has unveiled the interior of its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, marking a significant leap in the country's rail modernization efforts. The new trainset is slated to begin commercial operations on the crucial Kolkata–Guwahati route, promising a faster and more comfortable overnight journey to the Northeastern states.
A Quantum Leap in Overnight Rail Travel
Designed specifically for long-distance night journeys, the Vande Bharat sleeper variant introduces several passenger-centric upgrades. The coaches will feature upgraded berths, sealed gangways for reduced noise, and automated doors. In a move to enhance hygiene and convenience, the train will be equipped with aircraft-style bio-vacuum toilets.
Passengers opting for the AC First Class will enjoy additional luxuries, including shower facilities and dedicated baby care areas. This focus on premium amenities aims to set a new benchmark for overnight travel in India, blending speed with superior comfort.
Safety and Speed: Core Engineering Priorities
Safety has been a paramount concern in the design of this new train. The integrated safety systems comprise CCTV surveillance, emergency communication links, and India's indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system. KAVACH is designed to automatically apply brakes if it detects another train on the same line, significantly enhancing operational safety.
On the performance front, the train has already proven its mettle in trials. During high-speed testing, it successfully touched a speed of 180 kilometres per hour. For commercial service, Indian Railways plans to operate the sleeper Vande Bharat at speeds of up to 160 kmph, which will substantially cut travel time on the Kolkata-Guwahati corridor compared to existing overnight services.
The Road Ahead for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
The introduction of this train is just the beginning of a larger rollout. According to plans, more sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat are expected to be launched within the next six months. This pilot on the Kolkata-Guwahati line paves the way for a large-scale expansion across other major long-distance routes in the coming years.
This initiative is a core part of India's push to modernize its vast railway network, offering passengers a viable and efficient alternative to air and road travel for overnight journeys, particularly to the strategically important Northeast region.
