Surat International Airport to Get Duty-Free Shops, Enhancing Global Status
Surat Airport to Launch Duty-Free Shops in 4-5 Months

Surat International Airport Advances with Duty-Free Shopping Initiative

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has commenced the process to introduce duty-free outlets at Surat International Airport, marking a significant step forward two years after the airport was designated as an international facility. This development aims to align Surat with global standards for international airports, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

RFP Floated for Design and Operation of Duty-Free Shops

A request for proposal (RFP) has been issued for the design, development, operation, and maintenance of duty-free shops within the customs area of the terminal. This move follows the inauguration of the new terminal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 17, 2023, which has already elevated the airport's infrastructure.

Airport officials have emphasized that this addition will bring Surat in line with international practices, providing flyers with access to high-quality products at competitive prices. According to Surat airport director A N Sharma, "With Surat city considered to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, duty-free shops will add to its global exposure. We expect the shops to be operational in four to five months."

Details of the Duty-Free Shops and Product Offerings

The duty-free outlets will be strategically located with one shop each at departures and arrivals, ensuring convenience for all passengers. The shops will offer a diverse range of products, including:

  • Liquor and alcoholic beverages
  • Tobacco products
  • Cosmetics and personal care items
  • Chocolates and packaged snacks
  • Watches and jewellery
  • Electronic goods
  • Select "Made in India" products permitted by customs

This variety is designed to cater to the preferences of international and domestic travelers, providing authentic products that meet global standards.

Positive Reception from Surtis and Business Community

Residents of Surat have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will impart a more international feel to the airport. Rajesh Modi, a corporate executive, shared, "There are duty-free shops at international airports all over the world. This shop at Surat airport will give it an ‘international' feel, which was missing thus far. Duty-free shops give passengers a different feel." He also suggested the addition of a dedicated Surti food stall to showcase local delicacies like khaman, locho, alu puri, khawsa, and dal-kanda samosa.

Linesh Shah, chairman of the SGCCI aviation committee, highlighted the broader economic benefits, stating that duty-free shops would create a positive impression among foreign business travelers visiting Surat's diamond and textile industries. "Many international passengers cannot carry items like liquor due to luggage weight limits. Now, they will be able to buy them after landing here. Those who have forgotten electronic devices will also be able to buy them from duty-free shops. These shops are favourites among flyers as most have preferences for certain products for their quality."

Impact on Surat's Global Image and Economic Growth

The introduction of duty-free shops is expected to boost Surat's global exposure, supporting its reputation as a rapidly growing city. This initiative not only enhances passenger convenience but also contributes to the local economy by attracting more international travelers and business visitors.

As the process moves forward, the airport authorities are focused on ensuring a seamless implementation, with the goal of making Surat International Airport a key hub for international travel in the region.
