Punjab's First Green Chilli Export to Dubai from Ferozepur Boosts Farmers
In a landmark move for Punjab's agricultural sector, Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Tuesday flagged off the first consignment of 15 metric tonnes of green chillies from Hakumat Singh Wala village in Ferozepur district to Dubai. This historic export marks the first time fresh green chillies from Punjab are being shipped directly to international markets, bypassing traditional local channels.
Export Facilitation and Economic Impact
The export was facilitated by the Saragarhi Farmers Producer Company Limited, which has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with K S Exports. Under this agreement, 15 tonnes of chillies will be shipped every alternate day, ensuring a steady supply to international buyers. Farmers are now receiving a remunerative price of approximately Rs 28 per kilogram, which is significantly higher than the Rs 23-24 per kg typically offered by local agencies or middlemen. This price boost is expected to enhance farmers' incomes and incentivize more agricultural producers to engage in chilli cultivation.
Punjab's Chilli Production and Employment
Ferozepur district leads chilli production in Punjab, with over 2,747 hectares dedicated to chilli cultivation. Across the state, annual production reaches roughly 2,95,000 metric tonnes, making it a vital crop for the regional economy. The chilli sector provides direct employment to more than 20,000 people and supports an additional 45,000 livelihoods indirectly, highlighting its importance in rural development and job creation.
Varieties and Market Demand
The primary export focus is on the 'Gauri' variety of chillies, which is in high demand in Middle Eastern markets such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman. Other popular varieties include 'Teja' and 'Soldier', which may also be considered for future exports as the initiative expands. This targeted approach ensures that Punjab's chillies meet specific international quality standards and consumer preferences.
Official Statements and Future Prospects
Expressing his happiness at the event, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan stated that the export of Punjab-grown chillies to overseas markets would significantly benefit chilli growers and encourage other farmers to adopt chilli cultivation. He added that such initiatives will boost farmers' income and strengthen the state's agricultural economy, paving the way for more agricultural exports from Punjab.
Progressive farmers associated with the Saragarhi Farmers Producer Company were felicitated for their contributions to this successful venture. The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Punjab Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal, MLAs Fauja Singh Sarari and Ranbir Singh Bhullar, and CEO Sun Foundation Gurbir Singh, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this achievement.
This export initiative not only opens new revenue streams for Punjab's farmers but also positions the state as a competitive player in the global agricultural market, with potential for further growth and diversification in crop exports.
