PM Modi Lauds Export of Mysuru's GI-Tagged Agricultural Products to Maldives
In a significant boost for Karnataka's agricultural sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the 131st episode of his monthly radio program 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, praised the recent initiative to export Nanjangud bananas (Nanjangud rasabale), Mysuru veelyadele (betel leaves), and Indi lemons to the Maldives. Speaking from Mysuru, the Prime Minister emphasized that these products are renowned for their exceptional taste and quality, having received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which certifies their unique regional origin and characteristics.
Recognition of Farmer Efforts and Quality Enhancement
"Today's farmer seeks quality, but is also increasing quantity, and is making his mark as well," PM Modi stated, highlighting the dual focus on enhancing both the standards and scale of production. This recognition at the national level underscores the growing importance of GI-tagged products in India's export strategy, aiming to provide farmers with better market access and premium prices. The Prime Minister's remarks have sparked optimism among local farming communities, who see this as a validation of their traditional cultivation practices and hard work.
Training Initiatives for Export Readiness
According to BN Gnanesh, senior scientist and head of genetics and plant breeding at ICAR–JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Suttur, banana growers will soon undergo specialized training in packing techniques, which is critical for maintaining fruit quality during export. "A plan to provide training will be taken up in collaboration with the horticulture department," he explained. This initiative aims to equip farmers with the necessary skills to meet international standards, ensuring that the exported products retain their freshness and appeal, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in global markets like the Maldives.
National Pride and Economic Benefits
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Wadiyar expressed immense pride, stating that the PM's focus on Nanjangud bananas and Mysuru betel leaves in 'Mann Ki Baat' is a significant recognition at the national level. "It is a matter of immense pride for Mysuru and surrounding farming communities. The growing international demand for these unique agricultural products not only ensures premium price realisation for farmers, but also reinforces the importance of preserving traditional cultivation practices that define their distinct quality and identity," he said. This emphasis on exports aligns with broader efforts to strengthen India's agricultural exports while safeguarding local biodiversity and cultural heritage, contributing to sustainable economic growth.
