Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday launched the 'Agra World Capital of Footwear' campaign, aimed at promoting Agra as a global hub for footwear manufacturing and exports. The announcement comes ahead of the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand.
Campaign Objectives
The campaign seeks to position Agra, already known for its leather industry, as the premier destination for footwear production. It aims to attract investment, boost exports, and create employment opportunities in the region. Goyal emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government's vision of making India a manufacturing powerhouse.
India-New Zealand FTA Talks
The launch coincides with ongoing negotiations for an FTA between India and New Zealand. Such a deal is expected to enhance market access for Indian footwear and other products in New Zealand. Goyal expressed optimism that the FTA would open new avenues for trade and economic cooperation.
The footwear industry in Agra contributes significantly to India's exports, with major markets in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. The campaign aims to diversify and expand these markets, leveraging the potential FTA with New Zealand.
Government Support
The government has announced various incentives for the footwear sector under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Goyal urged industry stakeholders to capitalize on these benefits to enhance quality and competitiveness.
Industry leaders welcomed the campaign, stating it would help Agra gain global recognition and attract foreign buyers. They also called for infrastructure improvements and skill development programs to support the sector's growth.
