Nagpur's Fisheries Sector Embraces High-Value River Prawn Cultivation in Khindsi Lake
In a significant move to revitalize the fisheries sector in Vidarbha, Minister of State and Ramtek MLA Ashish Jaiswal has spearheaded the stocking of approximately four lakh river prawn seeds in Khindsi Lake at Ramtek earlier this week. This initiative marks a strategic departure from conventional fishery practices, focusing on the inclusion of high-value species to drive productivity and elevate the incomes of local fishermen.
Strategic Shift from Traditional Carps to Premium Prawns
Jaiswal highlighted that the fisheries sector in Nagpur district and the broader Vidarbha region has long been dominated by Indian major carps, including Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal. These species account for nearly 80-85% of total production, serving as staples for local consumption due to their affordability. However, this overdependence has resulted in limitations in output and seasonal price fluctuations, adversely impacting fishermen's livelihoods.
The introduction of river prawns, scientifically known as Macrobrachium rosenbergii, addresses these challenges by tapping into a lucrative market. Freshwater prawns are in high demand, with prices ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 800 per kilogram, offering a substantial income boost compared to traditional carps.
Scientifically Timed Stocking for Optimal Growth
The stocking of prawn seeds has been meticulously timed to align with the breeding and egg-laying cycle of river prawns. This biological synchronization is crucial for enhancing survival rates and supporting natural propagation within the reservoir ecosystem.
