The Koraput district administration has launched an extensive procurement operation for the ongoing Kharif marketing season, establishing 108 mandis across the region to facilitate rice purchases from local farmers. The initiative, which commenced on December 11, aims to procure a minimum of 15 lakh quintals of rice during the current season.
Strategic Distribution of Procurement Centers
District Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan revealed the detailed breakdown of the procurement centers, with 83 mandis operating under the Jeypore sub-division and 25 mandis functioning in Koraput sub-division. The collector emphasized that these procurement centers will remain operational until the administration achieves its primary target, with expectations of additional procurement goals in the subsequent phase.
Approximately 44,104 farmers have officially registered to participate in this year's Kharif marketing season, demonstrating significant engagement from the agricultural community. The administration has implemented comprehensive measures to ensure smooth operations and farmer convenience throughout the procurement process.
Comprehensive Measures Against Middlemen
In a significant move to protect farmers' interests, the administration has established special surveillance mechanisms to prevent harassment by middlemen and unauthorized agents. Collector Mahajan stated that special squads have been constituted to supervise procurement activities at each mandi, with strict action promised against anyone found misleading or exploiting farmers.
The administration has deployed multiple communication channels, including loudspeaker announcements, distribution of leaflets, and display of informational posters, to educate farmers about procurement guidelines and procedures. This awareness campaign aims to ensure that every registered farmer understands their rights and the proper processes involved.
Technology-Driven Transparency Initiatives
To maintain complete transparency in the procurement operations, the administration has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in every mandi. This electronic surveillance system will continuously monitor activities to deter any malpractices and ensure fair treatment of all farmers.
Additionally, the administration has appointed nodal officers and supervisors for each procurement center to oversee the entire process from start to finish. These officials will be responsible for monitoring daily operations, addressing farmer grievances, and ensuring compliance with all procurement regulations.
The administration has also directed Block Development Officers (BDOs) and tehsildars to conduct regular inspections of women Self Help Groups (SHGs) involved in the procurement process and submit timely reports on their functioning. This measure aims to strengthen the participation of women's groups in the agricultural supply chain.
Manas Ranjan Mahapatra, Chief Civil Supply Officer of Koraput, confirmed that the Regulated Market Committee has already initiated infrastructure upgrade work at various mandis to enhance facilities for farmers. All these coordinated efforts represent the administration's commitment to creating a farmer-friendly procurement environment during the Kharif marketing season.
